The selection panel appointed by President William Ruto to recruit a new member of the National Police Service Commission has begun its assignment following its inauguration today, 25 January 2023.

PSC Chairperson Amb. Anthony Muchiri presided over the inauguration of the seven-member panel, with a call to the team to identify a suitable member who will add value to the National Police Service Commission’s efforts to deliver on its mandate.

“You should bear in mind that the National Police Service Commission is the one that oversees the people who are tasked with ensuring the internal security of this country. The security of the state is paramount, so the people you pick to be members of this Commission should be persons who have national interests of security at heart,” said Amb. Muchiri.

The President appointed the members of the selection panel through Gazette Notice No. 271 of 13 January 2023 in accordance with Section 6(1)(a) of the National Police Service Commission Act, 2011.

They include Mr. Arthur Osiya (Executive Office of the President); Dr. Joyce Nyabuti (Public Service Commission); Mr. Gilbert Mutembei (Advocate of the High Court of Kenya); Dr. Monica Muiru (Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission); Dr. Raymond Nyeris (Kenya National Commission for Human Rights); Dr. Joyce Mutinda (National Gender and Equality Commission); and Mbeti Mchuki (Professional Societies of East Africa).

The Act, under Section 6(2)(a), provides that the Public Service Commission shall convene the first meeting of the selection panel, at which the members of the selection panel shall elect a chairperson from among their number.

Mr. Osiya, who spoke on behalf of the members of the panel, thanked the President for giving them the privilege to undertake the task and assured him that they will carry it out diligently.

“We will be very careful and diligent and we will also purpose to accomplish the task within the scheduled period,” he said.

The new member of the Commission will replace the former Commissioner Naftali Rono, whose term ended late last year.
